Should I stay or should I go?
You are a decorated Second World War army Colonel and you find out your house is haunted, what do you do?
Well in the case of Colonel sir Arthur Noble and his wife Lady Irene Noble, not a lot really.
They moved into their home on Gravel Lane in Chigwell in around 1953 and were apparently told from the get go that it was haunted. There were a lot of other claims attached to the property known as Marchings, that it not only a non-rent paying tenant in the guise of a White lady, but that it had also been the hunting lodge of King John as it was a stone’s throw from Hainault Forest, part of the larger Forest of Essex, a well known hunting ground for royals and those given permission by the crown.
I would say the house itself was not somewhere King John would have visited in the 12th or 13th century as the building has been dated as 16th century but…stone columns of unknown origin were found in the grounds and the architects were unsure of their origin so maybe that particular legend has some accuracy.
Anyway, onto the Colonel and his wife…I get the impression from putting together a potted biography about him that subjects such as ghosts would have been met with short shrift, this was a man who spent his formative years at boarding school (Felstead) and was then a military man. His deployment during World War Two to North Africa with the Essex regiment had him noted more than once for his dedication to service and also saw him awarded a Distinguished Service Order having displayed “conspicuous leadership, forcefulness and initiative” (Brigadier D.R.E.R. Bateman). During his later years he was very involved in the sports trust in nearby Harlow and helped launch Harlow Sports Centre.
After a few years they realised or at least Irene did, that the legend of the ghost was actually true…Lady Noble would see the apparition at the bottom of the stairs, watched it walk right past her. The myth was that it was a friendly ghost and as far as she was concerned, they were more than happy to co- exist with their house share. In a newspaper interview she was asked about contacting a spiritual medium to try and contact the entity to find out who she was, her reply? She could not see the point, plus the Colonel would hate it.
I am not sure who is currently living there, but I wonder if their revenant resident is still friendly and welcome
