Order...ORDER! a review of Ghosts
The possession of Button House
I have been a fan of the team behind Ghosts since their Horrible Histories time, I know, that is a real shock to some of you, what with me never mentioning my love of history at all…and I will admit to shedding a tear when the last episode of the TV series aired back in 2023 at Christmas (was it really nearly three years ago?)
When the film was announced, I proudly turned to my husband and told him that I did not care if he wanted to come or not, but that I was going to see it as soon as I could, fortunately my spouse loves Humphrey (Laurence Rickard), The Captain (Ben Willbond) , Kitty (Lolly Adefope) , Pat (Jim Howick) , Robin (Laurence again), Julian (Simon Farnaby), Thomas (Matt Baynton) and Lady B (Martha Howe-Douglas) as much as I do so I did not have to go alone.
Maybe he does not love The Captain quite as much as I do…oh yes, I am one of those girls, even though I realise it will remain unrequited, Thomas help me!
We see Button House in the initial throes of being converted into a hotel – no spoiler there – and some kids have decided to go urbexing, I will “leave” it at that point as anything further may risk giving the game away as to what is about to happen.
In a nutshell, the Ghosts need to communicate and obviously there is only one person who can speak with them and Alison has not been to visit for over one hundred days, how are they going to get a message to her? What comes next is a truly hilarious journey for one of them (I am pretty sure that some of the clips shown to advertise the film have told you who, but just in case you have not seen them, I will not divulge) and a very nervous wait for the rest back at the house.
I do think it is almost typical British comedy in that the lines do very much write themselves, but it genuinely does not stop you laughing out loud as they are so perfectly delivered. There is a Police chase - how fast does a Police standard issue astra estate go across the grass then? – a Ouija board - no pearl clutching thanks – a very cute baby and a discussion on the price of a certain chocolate bar.
The idiot neighbour that I always want to punch, Bag-Chetwynde makes an appearance, brilliantly portrayed by Geoff McGiven, although he is a supporting character rather than any fundamental part of the storyline but seeing Robin get a crush, Lady B having a moment of clarity and Pat taking on a quasi- paternal role – albeit very briefly, Damn your eyes! - with Thomas is quite heartwarming . I would also like to mention the cracking actor who plays Jack (Scott Ellis Watson), if they do make a sequel and oh how I hope they do as I for one do not want the Ghosts to “die”, he would be an amazing addition to the family.
I truly hope I have not given any clues away, basically it is very worth seeing and very funny, but I do think next time I go investigating I may use a Scotch Egg as a trigger object.
